This work tells the story of a day in the life of Carmen, drawing inspiration from Bizet’s classic opera “Carmen”. Set to the original music by John Bosbikin, this depiction of Carmen is set in an urban environment and follows her life during one 24 hour period.
It evokes themes of gender and class discrimination, questioning judgements based on profiling rather than behavior. We find out what it is like to be Carmen, and see the prejudice that she faces because she is a woman and of a lower class. It begs the question; does society view the exact same actions and judgements differently depending on the sex and place of a person? This issue has resurfaced in the present time with growing urgency. The rights of a woman to be able to stand on an equal playing field with a man is in jeopardy. It is not in jeopardy because of a change law of any kind, but by a change in the attitude of what behaviors are acceptable by each gender. The classes in our country are moving farther and farther apart. What if the tables were turned? “Day Old Coffee” seeks to explore that possibility.
