Koresh School of Dance – Class Descriptions
Koresh Dance Company

Since 1993 the Koresh School of Dance has offered open classes in dance instruction for adults. Our Center City Philadelphia studio at 2002 Rittenhouse Square boasts four sprung floor dance studios and large dressing rooms, with classes held seven days a week. We offer more than 37 adult classes in a wide variety of movement instruction, including tap, ballet, jazz, modern jazz and hip hop. Our instructors are widely regarded as some of the best in the city.

A classical dance form characterized by grace, precision of movement and elaborate formal gestures, steps and poses. Coordination, strength, flexibility, rhythm and musicality are all emphasized. Ballet shoes required.
Typically the style of dance you see on Broadway, concerts or television. Students warm up with stretching, isolations, strengthening exercises, and "across the floor" exercises such as turns and leaps. The class ends with a combination that is usually fast-paced and danced to popular music. Jazz shoes are optional; socks or bare feet acceptable.
Modern Jazz
This style of dance reflects the style of Koresh Dance Company. Modern Jazz classes encompass components from jazz, modern and ballet techniques. No shoes required; bare feet acceptable.
Contemporary Modern
This intermediate dance class will explore dynamic alignment to increase our options for movement, release tension, and get as close to flying as we can. We will harness momentum to create form, be musical, listen to our bodies responses, and get sweaty. Shannon Murphy is a level 3 Franklin Method Educator and will fuse Franklin Method fundamentals into the technical exploration by teaching a little anatomy and imagery to increase movement function, reduce the risk of injury and increase stability and mobility.

Hip Hop
Inspired by street dance styles, this class is by far our most popular. Isolations, stretching, rhythms, upper body strength and funky footwork are all emphasized. Instructors may incorporate elements from popping, breaking, locking and house dance. Each class ends with learning choreography to popular music. Clean sneakers required (please bring with you in a bag; do not wear your studio shoes on your way to class).
Tap is an original American art form that combines music and dance traditions from West Africa and the British Isles. Classes focus on technique and musicality and are supplemented by a wide variety of musical genres.  Students will also be exposed to both musical theater or "Broadway" tap and “hoofing” or rhythm tap. Each class includes a warm up, steps across the floor, guided improvisation exercises and a final combination. Tap shoes required.
Latin Fusion
Latin Fusion is an exciting dance style taught by Roberto Rodriguez-Garcia with his unique flavor of technical Jazz skills and Modern, while fusing the afro-Caribbean dance styles of Puerto Rico (Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cha Cha, Bomba). Class begins with basic isolations intermixed with Latin motions set in a traditional jazz/modern structure, that works on student’s coordination, strength and flexibility. At this level students dance skills are assessed and challenged by incorporating authentic Latin dance movements with jumps and turns across the floor. Dance combinations will strengthen dancers awareness of musicality, space, timing and precision, giving the freedom to execute flawless performances on or off stage. Proper dance attire is recommended along with jazz or character shoes.
